Gotcha

Got it

I got it

What do these informal phrases mean?

“What time are you coming over?”

“About 7.”

“Gotcha.”

Or

“I’ll be late tomorrow.”

“Ok, gotcha.”

Or

“She is in a yellow shirt waiting at Starbucks.”

“Got it.”

Or

“Make sure to feed the dog before you leave.”

“I got it.”

Or

“Please don’t do that again.”

“Ok, got it.”

In these example “got it”, “gotcha” and “I got it” all mean “I understand” or “I get what you’re saying.” It can also mean “I will do what you asked.”

It’s the short form of “I got you”.

Keep in mind it can also mean I got you literally. It can also be used if you trick someone:

For example, if you catch someone sneaking up on you and say “gotcha!”.

Or if you’re chasing your cat and you pick it up and say “gotcha!”.

“Got it” can also be used as a question, but not “gotcha”….

Got it?? 🙂
