What’s up, March!
It’s a new month so let’s start March with some casual conversation practice.
Here are some rules for using what’s up:
- It is the short or casual form of “What is up?” Most people never use the long form.
- It’s really a rhetorical question. Most people don’t expect a long answer.
- Don’t confuse “What’s up” with “What is up with that/her/him?” That’s a question about what is going on or what is wrong with something. It usually requires more of a response.
- It’s used in speech and texts a lot.
- It’s usually said in passing or to open a conversation.
Ways to say or text what’s up:
what’s up
what it do
what up
whaddup
yo
whassup
hey
sup
whazzup
what’s happening
how’s it going
Ways to answer what’s up:
hey
yo
what’s up with you?
nothing much(, you?)
not much(, you?)
nothing(, you?)
the usual(, you?)
Notice you can return the greeting with most of these by adding “you?” to the end.
Most of the time the greeting and the response can be the same.
