#TBT: “Boom Boom Pow” by The Black Eyed Peas and Onomatopoeias

It’s our first #tbt! On this day in 2009 the number one song in the US was “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas. Do you remember it?

We’ve talked about Boom as slang and an exclamation, but Boom and Pow are also Onomatopoeias. Try saying that one fast 3 times! An onomatopoeia is when a word sounds like the thing or action it describes. In other words, the pronunciation matches the sound. This is common in comic books (Bam, Pow, Kaboom, Whiz) and in animal sounds (Moo, Oink, Meow, Quack, Buzz).

Here are some popular songs with onomatopoeias, including “Boom Boom Pow”:

I got that (Boom boom boom)
How the beat bang (Boom boom boom)

I like that boom boom pow
Them chicken jackin’ my style

Jessie James, “Bang Bang”:

Bang, bang into the room
I know you want it
Bang, bang all over you
I’ll let you have it
Wait a minute, let me take you there
Wait a minute ’til you…

Ke$ha, “Tik Tok”:

TiK ToK, on the clock
But the party don’t stop no
Whoa-oh oh oh
Whoa-oh oh oh

Can you think of any other examples?
